An unidentified flying object - Image 1This is not the first time that people have reported seeing a UFO, nor will it likely be the last time. Recent sightings of a mysterious flying object in the sky over Stephenville, Texas last January 8 elicited a variety of responses from townsfolk and federal officials alike. If you want to know what they thought about it, a more detailed article awaits after the jump.

Saturn's UFO Ring - Image 1The image you see to the left is not a flying saucer. It's actually one of Saturn's moons that looks eerily like a UFO. Recent pictures show that Saturn has two of these moons and computer simulations indicate that they may have accumulated their rings by gathering debris from Saturn's own enigmatic ring. You'd think Saturn had had enough rings. More details, and a video of how these moves may have formed in the full article.

Ex-pilots, high-ranking officials ask UFO investigations re-opened - Image 1A panel of more than 20 former pilots and U.S. government officials held a press event early this week urging the current administration to re-open its investigation on Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) and find out once and for all the truth behind the existence of extra-terrestrial beings.

The topic was brought to the spotlight after Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich admitted during a televised debate that he's among those who've witnessed UFO sightings. Check out the full story via the "read more" link below.

Enthusiasts have seen quite a lot of "UFO videos," but actual appearance of aliens are yet to be confirmed. Whether our extraterrestrial friends actually exist or not, whoever designed their ships should definitely make sci-fi games.

Here's a video supposedly taken this August 6th in Haiti, showing a couple of UFOs up close before they joined a group of what we can only see as flickering lights. Given that CG technology can make almost everything look real on video, we understand why many are torn apart between believing or not.

Your take is as good as ours, so tell us what you think. Video embedded below:

The Guardian reports that the British Ministry of Defense has decided to open its "X-Files" on UFO sightings to the public for the first time. This move comes in the wake of news that the French national space agency will be releasing its own UFO files in March.

According to the Guardian, the 24 files due for release include witness reports of apparent UFO sightings by both civilians and military personnel. Most of these were collected and filed by "a small, secret unit" within defense intelligence called DI55. Each of the 24 files, which date back to 1967, contain 200 to 300 reports of sightings along with internal Ministry of Defense briefings and correspondence.

A date for the release of the documents has not yet been set, but it is hoped to be within the following weeks. This should prove to be a welcome addition to the existing body of knowledge collected so far regarding UFOs and UFO sightings around the world.

UFO - Image 1Alien technology can save the planet from global warming. A story quite right out of a comic book? Not really, says a former Canadian Defense Minister.

83-year old Paul Hellyer, who served in Prime Minister Lester Pearson's cabinet and oversaw the integration of the Canadian Armed Forces, says "we need to persuade governments to come clean on what they know. Some of us suspect they know quite a lot, and it might be enough to save our planet if applied quickly enough."

Though the idea seems like it was taken right out of Conspiracy Theory, it does have some solid grounding based on facts and logic. Hellyer points to alien spacecraft sightings and crashes such as the mysterious incidents in Roswell, New Mexico, and other suspected cover-ups.

He says that for UFOs to reach Earth, they must have traveled extraordinary distances. This would only have been possible if the alien technology carries some kind of advanced propulsion methods or special fuels. If this is the case, he says, the technology "could eliminate the burning of fossil fuels within a generation ... that could be a way to save our planet."

Hellyer's statements may have been spurred by the clamor for a reduction in fossil fuel reduction after the dramatic disintegration of ice shelves in Antarctica. He also made news in Canada after telling the press that he saw a UFO.

Tenth International Ufology Conference - Image 1Recently, more than a thousand aficionados and experts gathered in Viña del Mar for the Tenth International Ufology Conference, organized by Chile's Ufology Investigation Group. The highlight of the meeting was the display of photos and videos allegedly taken by the members of Chile's Armed forces.

The military video and photos included a photo of a spherical metallic object captured flying over Antarctica and a video of Navy ships being pursued by a luminous object. Aside from that, Rodrigo Bravo, Captain of the army's Fifth Division also talked about his thesis entitled "Observations of unidentified aerial phenomena identified by the Civil Air Force."

Although the captain's words do not represent the Chilean Armed Force's position on UFOs, he had been given the authorization by his superiors to participate in the conference.

Also present in the conference is retired official Armando Valdés who is involved in one of Chile's first documented UFO abductions, known as the Valdés case. This happened on April 1977 when Armando and five members of an army patrol, saw two bright objects descending from the sky.

He checked it out by himself and according to his colleagues, he just vanished. 15 minutes later, he re-appeared and passed out. It was reported that the date on his watch had been advanced by five days and he had about a week's growth of beard. His colleagues also mentioned that when Valdés regained consciousness, he uttered these words: "You do not know who we are, nor where we come from. But I tell you that we will soon return."

Fact or pure fiction? Your guesses are as good as ours.

AlienAnd here they are: the top ten Close Encounters of the Third Kind, disproved, debunked and refuted:

Myth 10: Aliens Constructed the Great Pyramids

Fact: Construction methods used by the ancient Egyptians are well documented in National Geographic, as well as other places. Those ancients had a lot more on the ball than we often give them credit for.

Myth 9: - Cattle Mutilations Are The Work Of Extra-Terrestrials

Fact: These types of predation been going on for thousands of years. It is only in the last thirty that people have thought to attribute them to extra-terrestrials. In fact, close and objective study shows that these "mysterious" features can be attributed to natural decay and scavengers.

Myth 8: The U.S. Government is Hiding Alien Bodies and Technology In Area 51

Fact: The U.S. Government - especially recently - is secretive by nature. This is near the site of several old nuclear tests, and media reporter Leslie Stahl suggests it may be a dumping ground for toxic waste as well - a good enough reason to stay away.

Myth 7: The Mysterious "Crop Circles" Are Actually Alien Spacecraft Landing Sites

Fact: Like the Pacific Northwest's bigfoot, this has been proven to be a hoax perpetrated by people with too much time on their hands.

Myth 6: The Face On Mars Was Built By an Alien Civilization

Fact: Close-up photos from different angles show that it is no more than a natural rock formation. Geology and wishful thinking can play strange tricks on the eyes.

Myth 5: The Alien Autopsy Film

Fact: See #7. The Special Effects artist who created this film confessed earlier this year.

Myth 4: Flying Saucers Are Alien Space Vehicles

Fact: This is the result of a misprint. The original reporter described what he saw as a "crescent shaped" that "flew erratic, like a saucer if you skip it across the water"—not that what he saw resembled an actual saucer. Unfortunately, the description stuck, and (see #6) people see what they want to see...

Myth 3: Alien Implants

Fact: According to Joe Nickell, who writes for the Skeptical Inquirer: “Since 1994 alleged implants have been surgically recovered but they’ve become remarkably diverse: one looks like a shard of glass, another a triangular piece of metal, still another a carbon fiber, and so on. " See #6.

Myth 2: Alien Abductions

Fact: False memories are sometimes created in therapy by psychologists who are careless. Other research have shown that a psychological process called "sleep paralysis" can also lead to strange delusions.

Myth 1: The Roswell Incident

Fact: In the years between the end of World War II and the 40-year period of paranoia known as the "Cold War," there was a spy program called Project Mogul. The scraps recovered by the Air Force were that of a weather balloon, and eyewitness descriptions are consistent with this. The stories of alien bodies appeared much later, and seem to be related to local folklore going back a century.

UFO

Be a real life Mulder and Scully with this new Google map mash-up from Poly9 Group Inc., a software research & development lab located in Quebec City, Canada. They have also developed maps for haunted houses and Santa Claus sightings.

Using information from individual sighting accounts from the National UFO Reporting Center (no, J and K are not part of that org), Poly9 plots it in the map; the cute spaceship cartoons indicate the actual sightings. When you click on those, it gives you a blow by blow description of the sighting. The interface, created by MSN Virtual Earth and Google Earth, can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

The truth is mapped there.
