Ben Underwood, a.k.a Sonar Boy, has been making noise in the headlines ever since People Magazine featured him in their July edition. Tagging him as "The Boy Who Sees With Sound", much admiration and speculation has been stirred up because of his ability to "see" through echolocation. How amazing is his ability? Well, let's see how well you'd do if you lose your eyesight to retinal cancer at the age of three, and still manage to grow up enjoying stuff kids his age do. Like rollerblading, playing Foosball, and even video games. But while some people may be incredulous, echolocation is, in fact, not some superhuman feat, but rather, is something that can be deemed as innate in all of us. The only thing is that, others are more attuned to this ability, like Ben, because of their disabilities. In losing his sense of sight, his body then learned to adapt to other methods, in order for him to compensate for the sense he lacks. In his case, he uses echolocation. By clicking his tongue, the sound waves bouncing back to him lets him know if there is an object nearby. Basically, what happens is that the echo from his clicking tongue bounces back to him, and the brain hears the combination of the sounds as something like an alteration in pitch. Although you may not be aware of it, your ears sure can pick up the difference. In fact, anyone can echolocate. It's just a matter of training the ears. And as Daniel Engber at Slate.com said, "Sensory compensation may not be a myth, but it's not a miracle, either." Just look at Sonar boy. |
