Of gay sheep and humans... - Image 1Oregon Health and Science University's Charles Roselli wondered why some rams would love to exclusively engage in sexual intercourse with other rams rather than ewes. And when he discovered of low testosterone presence on those questionable rams, he decided to correct them with the old testosterone-from-a-needle trick.

Now this raised a whole lot of protests and suspicions from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Not only that, but since PETA's aggressive and public campaigns against the research, gay advocates and normal citizens began to protest, too - all for different and insanely wrong reasons.

The continuous wrongful clamor of protesters soon reached a peak when London's Sunday Times published an article entitled "Science Told: Hands Off Gay Sheep". It claimed that Roselli was trying to figure out a cure for homosexuality, effectively clearing the way for "breeding out" homosexuality in humans.

Furthermore, Martina Navratilova, a tennis star who is both pro-PETA and openly gay, claimed in an open letter that the research "can only be surmised as an attempt to develop a prenatal sexual treatment" for the sexual conditions. Some even went as far to say that the researchers were planting chips on the sheeps' brains. What do "gamers" have to say about that?

Despite the clarifications on the objectives and the manner the research is conducted, PETA and Navratilova still hold their ground against it. Navratilova said, "How in the world could straight or gay sheep help humanity?" Shalin Gala, a PETA representative working on the sheep campaign, concluded that the control of sexual orientation is a "natural implication" to what Roselli and his colleagues were doing, despite any reasons made.

This would have probably been a good theme for Pretty Sheep...

turkeys

We won't take you for a ride down Hypocrisy Avenue by saying we don't eat meat and poultry products. This is a company of carnivores and no one here thinks tofurky even looks like the real thing. But there's a big difference between enjoying a turkey sandwich and subjecting the birds to brutal cruelty that would put a wicked smile on Jeffrey Dahmer's face.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) uncovered a shocking secret at a Butterball turkey plant in Ozark, Arkansas.

Between April and July 2006, PETA undercover investigators reported live birds whose legs were shoved into the metal shackles, from which they hang upside-down on their way to being slaughtered.

PETA's investigators also witnessed how live birds were "slammed against transport trucks and walls, punched and kicked, hung by broken legs, used as a punching bag, and even sexually assaulted—all either for "fun" or out of frustration. One worker crushed a live turkey's head under his shoe until her skull exploded, and another swung a bird so hard against a handrail that he exposed her spine. "

One way to help the turkeys (and other livestock) is to go vegetarian and stop consuming meat altogether. But if that is out of the question, and we don't fault you for that, you can sign PETA's petition to include the birds under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA). turkeys may not have the nobility of horses, they are not endangered like the Giant Panda, but there is no excuse for cruelty. Click on the "Via" link below to sign the petition.

Three weeks old, and already reserved to be soldBio-engineering is one of the things you don't want to involve yourself in, especially if you don't want PETA to be hounding you from behind. See that's one thing you never want to do. It's right up there with not chewing on power lines. But apparently, Allerca, a US biotech firm, likes chewing on power lines and they're causing furry heads to turn, without clashing paws against PETA.

They have just released the first set of specially bred cats that are hypoallergenic. What does that mean? Simply put: cats that don't give you sneeze-fits, red eyes, asthma attacks, and allergies. The cats were selectively bred by reducing a protein that triggers allergic reactions.

The good thing about this is they never used bio-engineering. No genetic manipulation, and splicing, and whatnot. It's natural breeding. They pooled a large number of cats and found a very small group which didn't have the glycoprotein Fel d1 (that's the protein that causes allergies). This is what they meticulously bred together.

Those three cats are just three weeks old. And they're reserved by waiting cat-lovers. How much is a no-sneeze kitten? Yes, they cost quite a lot: $ 3,950. But hey, at least you get to save on all the antihistamine pills, inhalers, and tissue boxes.

chinchillaPETA's red-paint-splashing campaign may have failed to convince everyone to stop wearing fur, but the chinchilla's adorable personality may do the trick. There was a time no one's even seen a living chinchilla but the animals are becoming more popular on the pet scene.

Chinchillas, or chins, are South American rodents which resembles a short-eared, long-tailed rabbit. About 15in (38cm) long with a 6in (15cm) tail. It weighs up to 2.2lb (1kg) and feeds on seeds, fruits, and herbs. Common in the Andes at elevations of up to 18,000ft (5,500m).

Chins are social animals like prairie dogs but live in rocky environment. Because they come from the Andes Mountains, they require fairly low temperatures and humidity. Unlike hamsters, whose life cycle is shorter than a TV commercial break, chins can live from 12 to 20 years.

They were nearly hunted nearly exterminated for its fur until people started raising chins in farms. While we don't condone the use of fur for fashion, chin farming did save the wild population. Unfortunately, it came too late for the short-tailed chinchilla. This species is believed to be extinct.

Chins have the highest fur density of any land animal with more than 20,000 hairs per square cm. Their fur is so dense it actually suffocates fleas and other parasites. Chinchillas fur, which is very thick and luxurious are originally gray in color. But they now come in shade of silvery gray, white, beige, black and purplish- gray.

Owning a chin, or any pet, is a big responsibility. It not advisable to purchase pets on a whim. Before you buy a chinchilla, please read the following Q&A with chin expert Jennifer Gardner.
