The owner of Olympia Moto Sports located in Hendersonville Eric Congdon opened a crate from China and discovered a cat inside. The cat, which was appropriately named China, chewed through one of the boxes with motorcycle gear and got stuck in it when it was shipped from Shanghai last April 3.Congdon gave an account of his discovery saying that "I saw something in the container move. I turned up the headlights on the fork lift to get a better look." He said that he saw the cat weak and cowering in a corner. When China wouldn't let them come close, they immediately contacted animal services in North Carolina. The ordeal for China does not end there since North Carolina law states that any animal entering the country has to be vaccinated and quarantined for six months. How did China survive? Well, Raleigh veterinarian Michelle Misavage gave a theory on this amazing feat. Usually we say that animals can only survive a few weeks without food and only a few days without water .The theory is that cats have such good kidneys their bodies adjust to the lack of water and somehow they received small amounts of moisture from condensation. China is set to be adopted by one of Congdon's co-workers so at least we can be assured that there's a home waiting for it when it comes out of quarantine. Hopefully, China will live a long and happy life with its new master. |
