hobbit

This is an update to a past article wherein we made mention the discovery of miniature human skeletons two years ago on a remote island in Indonesia. The discovery suggested that hobbits are real after all.

In 2004, the remains that were found in Flores island were concluded by researchers to represent a new species of human which was dubbed Homo floresiensis, named after the place in which they were found. This homonoid was about 3-feet tall with brains roughly the size of grapefruits. The theory asserted that "early human ancestors travelled to the island about 840,000 years ago, evolved into the new species, and that there was no subsequent human migration to the island until they died out about 15,000 years ago".

Some disputed the findings, saying that the one reasonably complete skeleton classified as "LB1" probably belonged to an early human suffering from microencephaly, a condition where the head and brain are abnormally small. One of those that made the opposing argument is a team led by Robert Eckhart, professor of developmental genetics and evolutionary morphology at Pennsylvania State University.

Eckhart's team said that this was "false as pygmy elephants arrived on the island twice and during periods of low sea levels, Flores was isolated from other islands only by short distances". Whether the theory is true or not, hobbits seems to be gaining wide recognition after their debut in the successful movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien series, Lord of the Rings.
