Researchers found an alternative to animal test - Image 1With Professor Jonathan Dordik's discovery of an alternative to animal testing, it looks like animals would be able to roam free again instead of being locked up in labs for experiments. He was able to create a small, rectangular glass chip that mimics human reactions to potentially dangerous toxic chemicals.

Together with Professor Douglas Clark of the University of California, Dordik was able to create a chip that resembles a standard microscope slide. Inside it are hundreds of hundred of tiny cell cultures and enzymes. It's crafted to mimic human reactions to potentially toxic chemical compounds.

The reaction of the glass chip tells directly the outcome of the testing. Now, if the cells inside die or stop growing, it's a sign that a deadly toxin was present in the substance.

Dr. Alan Goldberg, director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at Johns Hopkins University sad that these "in vitro" - literally, tests in glass - chips hold the most promise since they are efficient, fast and easy to manipulate.
