Researchers believe new Greenland ice sheet data to improve climate change models - Image 1

Word is that a new study from the University of Buffalo, backed by scientists and researchers all focused on Greenland's ice sheets and flow, has come a few steps closer to nailing down the ice sheet's dynamics. A recent report says that the new discoveries have new data that could prove more helpful in the generation of a more accurate climate change model - especially on sea level rise and effects on global warming.

"Ice sheet models usually don't include all the complexity of ice dynamics that can happen in nature," said Beata Csatho, Ph.D., assistant professor of geology at the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Buffalo. She is sure that the new finds will increase the precision of the ice sheet modelers for shaping up the climate change modeling.

The entire research, which will be available in the scientific journal Journal of Glaciology, will also provide theoretical advice for predicting ice sheet flow and behavior as it has been observed in nature. At the least, the new data will be able to show how remote sensing and the use of digital imaging techniques can fill the model processors with rich data sets. And that's without actually extracting field data in real time. Csatho said:

If current climate models from the IPCC (United Nations' International Panel on Climate Change) included data from ice dynamics in Greenland, the sea level rise estimated during this century could be twice as high as what they are currently projecting.

She also points out that the new information was gathered from observing Greenland's faster moving ice sheet, Jakobshavn Isbrae. It's the same ice sheet that some researchers have observed since last year and also have concluded more or less of the same estimates of the rise of sea level. More developments on this as they come in.
