At the Beijing Olympic Games, 25 world records have fallen - seven of them alone were broken by Michael Phelps of the US. While records being broken are not foreign during the Olympics, the sheer amount of them this year is astounding. Does water in Chinese swimming pools have steroids or something? Nah - according to New Scientists, the answer lies in the architecture of the Beijing pool. More after the link. |

In less than two days - 1 day, 18 hours, and 50 minutes as of this writing - the Large Hadron Collider will be activated. Any of you worried? There's nothing to fear but fear itself. And the Large Hadron Collider. But why are we afraid of it, really? What can it actually do besides making a black hole to swallow up the world? Follow the wormhole into the full article. |

Imagine connection speeds up to 60 times more than what we have today. That'd be a miracle, since we all know that even if the fastest pipelines are laid, there are still the limitations of electronics to deal with. Luckily, Australian scientists have found a way to drop electronics altogether, and make circuits fully photonic. Yes, photonic. The future awaits at the full story. |

Apparently, the secret to anti-gravity is not attaching toasted bread butter-side up to the back of a cat. The secret is (ta-dah!) ionized air, or if we want to be more smart about it, plasma. A professor at the University of Florida (who probably does not believe in the buttered-toast-and-cat setup) will be building his very own flying saucer from this principle and hopes to get it flying next year. Story in the full article. |

I wasn't worried at all. Not at all. My fingernails just chewed themselves, in case anyone asks. The ignition of the Large Hadron Collider - which a lot of people believe can cause a black hole to appear and suck us all into a parallel dimension - has been delayed. You have one more month to enjoy life before the end of the world the launch. Story in the full article. |

There's a reason people use paper to write on, but scientists don't like listening to conventional wisdom. You know how mad they can be. At any rate, a bunch of physicists take a page from Green Lantern and have figured out a way to store images in vapor. The images keep for as much as 30 microseconds, which is 30 millionths of a second. Keep your snarky comments till you find out how and why they did it. |

The Large Hadron Collider, the largest and most powerful particle accelerator, is scheduled to be up and running in the very near future. It's so powerful that it is feared to be able to create a black hole that can swallow the Earth, and then some. And that's just one of many other dangers it poses. So, when it becomes fully operational in the next few months... should we worry? |

There's always been some cases of discrepancy between tennis players and the judges on whether a line call was properly made or not. A recent study from Sussex University explained how the science behind motion perception can shed some light behind this very competitive sport. You can find out the results of the study in our full article after the jump. |

The question of how the universe came to be is a common one now, and the Big Bang theory does a good job of giving us clues on what actually happened. However, has anyone stopped to think what there was before the huge explosion of matter? Scientists have, and they say there could very well have been a twin universe to ours before this one came to be. Details in the full article. |

A new kind of material is making quite a lot of buzz among scientists. Called graphene, this new material recently aided researchers in calculating one of the fundamental constants of nature, allowing us to solve one of the universe's mysteries. The amazing thing is, graphene is only an atom thick. Read more in the full article. |
