Coal fired power plant - Image 1The U.S. has received its share of criticisms about the steps it's taking to fight climate change. A plan has now been set to action in order to curb both the political slack and the dreaded weather phenomenon.

A coal-fired power plant in Wisconsin is now the site for one of the most advanced climate change-fighting technologies. Power plant operator We Energies is cooperating with tech provider Alstom to reduce carbon dioxide emission in power plants drastically.

Carbon dioxide is widely known as the most abundant greenhouse gas in the planet. This gas traps heat in the atmosphere, resulting in an increase in the average global temperature. Given that, the U.S. government has set the tone in addressing the biggest problem.

Alstom says that its technology costs about US$ 10 million a year, but reduces carbon dioxide emissions by a whopping 90 percent. This is vital as the worst global warming offenders are coal-fired power plants.

The system works by "chilling" power plant exhaust smoke using ammonium carbonate. With this method, much of the greenhouse gas is segregated, left behind in stacks, and is stopped from running loose in the atmosphere.

If this method proves successful in its first year of testing, implementation across power plants of the same type may be the next step. Alstom may just be the key to striking a balance between protecting the planet and keeping economies stable with enough power for industries to use.
