fear is the mind-killer - Image 1A funny story was published before in Forbes. It says that the best tip that one mogul had came from an elephant tamer. Elephants learn at a young age that when caught, they can't escape. When they grow up to become big elephants, they never try to escape anymore for fear of not succeeding.

Talk about elephants that don't forget. But in a recent study, humans exhibit this funny trait of fearing too. Our amygdala, in the brain, is responsible for making us go chicken in a stressful situation; a bad childhood experience, perhaps, like drowning as a child, and then avoiding water when you grow up.

Amygdala is the primitive fear part in the brain that makes us react swiftly in the face of danger by making adrenaline flow. This was great for humans during the time when primal beasts roam the land and our ancestors had but spears and rocks to protect themselves. But the world is different now, hence, humans have evolved to have a part of the brain that treats fear more analytically.

This part is the neocortex, the part that analyzes risks, weighs situations to decide if it's best to stay or to go in a perilous event. The neocortex and the amygdala work hand in hand; when you chicken out, you use the primitive amygdala, and when you control your fear, ala Bene Gesserit, your neocortex rules out, a higher intelligence present in the brain.

The problem with the neocortex is that it's reactions are much slower. Fast-paced tech and social evolution often outraces the evolution of our neocortexes. This is why scientists are still trying to find out better ways of calculating risks.

Because, as it turns out, humans are still not able to set their primal fears free.
