Video: Birds in North America are disappearing by the millions - Image 1In a video we encountered, it reported that tens of millions of common birds are disappearing in North America because of huge factory farms and sprawling urban settlements. In the 40 years of bird monitoring, the Audobon society reported that there was a 60% to 80% plunge in some of the common bird specie.

These birds are responsible for keeping ecosystems healthy and thriving because they eat the fruits, disperse seeds and kills insects. Their numbers indicate the health and status of an ecosystem.

In the Canadian landscape, the most affected are the grassland birds. Urban sprawls are slowly closing in on these birds' wood lots, affecting their natural habitats. Also, wet land birds are also experiencing a sharp decline in their population because of polluted lakes and streams and the draining of these wetlands. Their essential habitats do not completely disappear but they have entirely changed to the point that these birds can't adapt to it anymore.

Although these common birds still have their numbers by the million, they will soon become extinct if their population continues to drop. An example would be the passenger pigeon. Before, their numbers were in the millions. Today, none of their kind exists.
