A communications satellite by U.S. defense company Lockheed Martin failed to reach its target orbit due to some technical errors of the Russian rocket carrying it. According to the the Khrunichev space center, the engine of the Briz-M booster failed to work properly throughout the whole scheduled time. Because of this, it could not take the satellite to its planned orbit. But all is not lost as there's still a way to fix things up. Russian space agency Roskosmos said that the satellite "can be controlled but is in an orbit of 28,000 kilometers instead of the planned 36,000 kilometers." Regarding this method being proposed, a Russian space official said that "Specialists can try and use the satellite's own engines to raise it into a higher orbit." But by doing this procedure, it would reduce the 15-year lifetime of the satellite. |
