Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai put forward a concept last November 8, 2006 about the deterioration of the environment and proposed a campaign entitled the Billion Tree Campaign with the goal of planting one billion trees by the end of 2007.

A little more than a year after, the results have been tallied and put forward during a meeting with Wangari Maathai and Prince Albert II of Monaco that the Billion Tree Campaign has already reached its goal of planting a billion trees.

The project was a collaborated effort by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Kenyan Green Belt Movement, and the Prince of Monaco. While the campaign was met by a lot of doubters at the start, Mother Earth was more than glad for all the support people all over the world have given to prove them wrong.

Wangari Maathai, Kenyan Green Belt Movement founder and patron of the campaign thanked everyone for their efforts and had this to say:

I am elated beyond words at the global interest and action that was motivated by the Billion Tree Campaign. I knew we had it within us as a human family to rise up! We called you to action almost exactly a year ago and you responded beyond our dreams. Thank you very much! Now we must keep the pressure on and continue the good work for the planet. Plant another tree today in celebration!
