Computer Brain - Image 1Look up. Do you see a thought bubble? Of course you don't. But zoom out a bit and imagine someone was watching you from his computer screen, seeing a thought bubble above your head indicating that you are reading this right now. It's the ultimate philosophical nightmare: we're not real, we're just a series of electric impulses darting about who think we're real. The old we're-just-brains-in-a-jar argument.

What are the chances of such a philosophical blackhole? Dr. Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University, is quite specific on the number: "My gut feeling, and it’s nothing more than that, is that there’s a 20 percent chance we’re living in a computer simulation."

Such a thought is not foreign to us who have played the Sims and watched "The Matrix". Paranoia aside, isn't it possible for us to be part of a program and not be aware of it? The tastes and smells, the joy and pains, all sensation is just electrical impulses in our heads. It's entirely possible that all these electrical impulses are done inside the processes of a super computer.

That's exactly what Bostrom suggests. An advanced race of "posthumans" have built a supercomputer that simulates their ancestors, ie, us:

I think it’s highly likely that civilization could endure to produce those supercomputers. And if owners of the computers were anything like the millions of people immersed in virtual worlds like Second Life, SimCity and World of Warcraft, they’d be running simulations just to get a chance to control history — or maybe give themselves virtual roles as Cleopatra or Napoleon.

This explains why there's suffering and misery in the world. It's being run by humans. Who hasn't let their Sims go hungry just to see what happens? (I killed Kenny! I'm a computer simulated bast****!)

Spread the happiness. ON playasia, the psp's gps is finally on sale!! If you keep delaying, now would be a good time to buy it, with all the new homebrew including Deniska's 3d mode ($60). http://www.play-asia.com/SOap- 23-83-7rqf-71-bh-49-en-15-gps- 84-j-70-1mij.html

Yeh surely the "posthumans" would have made the QJ ppl delete this artical so we didn't think about it. But on the other hand if I was a "posthuman" I'd love to watch the people in my computer simulated world get all paranoid about not being real. Maybe one of the "posthumans" made us know we weren't real just to make us scared and paranoid.
BTW: Posthumans, plz can you make me live to 1000 without growing old? Thanks!

Why make people paranoid, if this was a simulation i think the stupid people would be exterminated. Seriously do people think nowadays. I guess anyone can be a philosopher at Oxford University. OK i think i should go and philosophically Show them the truth. News flash Stop watching the matrix and playing the Simms. Try getting answers to Cancer and diseases you morons. if true..

wouldn't the "people" on the other side of the monitor have their own "people" controlling them and so on? How would they know they are not being controlled as well..

Sad how many people just came in to say stupid stuff saying "matrix this, matrix that" err...

sure, this philosopher may have some farfetched ideas. But as the word says, it's his Own idea. And his own theory, nothing more.

Good read, and strange idea. but again, we don't know everything in life.

» So QJ reports people's gut feelings now?

This is kind of beyond a joke. I agree with most of the stuff that's put up when people complain that it's not game related, but a guy has a gut feeling that we're a simulation, and it gets put on here?

Or is it because he went to Oxford? If that's the case, I'm about to go to Cambridge for maths, and I have a gut feeling that there's a 47.2% chance that the core of the sun is made of maple syrup. Now, get posting the article about my gut QJ!

 » It is possible...

If it's true, then the person who's controlling me is a mean person. Let's start when I was four, I slipped and split open my chin and I remember there was all this blood all over the floor and the daycare (it happened when I was at daycare) just put a band-aid over my chin after it finally stopped bleeding. Then my dad takes me home, my brother asks if I can see my cut, I remove the band-aid and my brother sees flesh dangling from my chin and he says that I need stitches. Then when I was older, I tripped over a shoe and fractured my wrist. Then a couple of years after that I broke two toes and one finger, plus I stretched the ligement on my right index finger and the list goes on and on. I bet the person who is controlling me (if it is true) is probably laughing.

 » If this is true

if this is true this would mean that ourlives are pointless we would be here only for entertainment, this also would mean that the computer used to emulate us would be running for billions of years, or that they could fast forward the machine and it would be going extreamly fast meaning our live would pass in only a couple of seconds, also this would mean that this supposid computer would be soooo powerful that it can control the universe (unless its just controlling what we see, as for space travel it must be looping space) also how do we (or I) know that this computer is controlling everyone in this earth (or universe) when i cant see into other peoples minds how do i know that this is all an illusion and they are waching only me react to the universe around me??? (this theory really makes or opens a lot of questions and kinda makes you feel paronoid)

   Re: na2rul - 2007-08-16
» @ Keving. This is totally insane. im shocked this is the top 10 post

if it cud ave bn fast forwarded, those few seconds will still be a long life 4 us in theory since we also speed up.

   by bob (Unregistered) - 2007-08-16
» lol 20% it sounds like he just pulled that number out of his ass or something

actually its more like 99.999%... there's only 1 real universe. in that universe there are hundreds of simulations of universes running. in each of those simulated universes there are another hundred simulations running, and so on and so on. the complexity of the simulations doesn't even matter because you would never be able to tell from inside the simulation anyway. so if you were born into any random universe, chances are you're almost certainly in a simulation.

   Re: WiiCool - 2007-08-17
 » ok...

Obviously, we are real. No need to explain that. Instead of the simulation thing, you can argue that we are a creation of God, as is the whole universe, created billions of years ago, and you can say everything as we know exists in a created dimension within an original dimension of God. But no, this guy chose to say some computer is simulating us.

   Re: . (Unregistered) - 2007-08-19
» ya, you are entirely correct.

people are too eff'n stupid to understand what a simulation is. this is an algorithmically controlled universe because we abide by mathematical laws of physics. therefore its nearly 100% true that we are a simulation, if not computer then simply a spacial simulation running off of physical algorithms. it doesnt mean we are not real. it just means we need to look at our place in reality a bit differently.

 » who cares

so what if we are a simulation. im not going to change my life or anything because of it.

   Re: . (Unregistered) - 2007-08-19
» umm, ya, thats the point.

the point of metaphysics (a form of philosophy) is to understand our origins of knowledge to the point where we understand what truely matters, social morality. because topics such as this are so existential it lets us understand that as humans we really understand nothing (Socrates).

 » The 13th floor

Sounds like the movie the 13th floor. came out way before the matrix and sounds much more like this guys theory then the matrix does. However w/ that said lets think of this for a minute. 100 years ago we barely had cars that went like 15 mph, a computer was un heard of and tv? Think of how far we have come w/ technology in the past 100 years. now although hard to do because it seems like we have reached our limits. imagine what we can do 100 years from now. or even 500 years from now. The idea of a virtual world similar to our own isn't to far fetched. The theory is just like the alien life form theory. right now we just don't know. Watch the 13th floor you will see what I mean.

   Re: SomeGuy (Unregistered) - 2007-08-16
» HAHA I was gonna say that :P

The movie the matrix ripped off, everyone has been ripping off that idea for years. It's so old I can't believe it's still news.

I swear the last 2 matrix movies were just an extended 2 part sequel and that there was sposed to be a third movie or layer after that. How else could neo use matrix like abilities outside of the matrix.

but the 13th floor dvd was released, they had to change plans because everyone who missed the movie would see the similarities and still do.

 » surprisingly

I think the guy is getting there, it is very healthy to think out of the box. Technically we are in the box, so if we are in it, imagine what is out of it. I guess that is the way that this guy is thinking. Religions have been doing the same for thousands of years now... Not a very new idea, just a new presentation. you could say that we are living in the dream of someone, I wouldn't agree with that, but ok. I would agree that this universe isn't all of existence, just the existence we know. I'm not trying to get wierd, but it is true that there is more to everything than we can understand. This reminds me for some reason that our life is like steam, there one moment, gone the next moment. If this universe is all temporary, than what was/ is / will be permanent? Makes one question eternity as opposed to ephemerality.
