Black holes have simple feeding habits - Image 1 Supermassive black holes are big (yes, that's why it's called supermassive and not just kindamassive), and the biggest can have a mass equivalent of 10 billion Suns.

Most galaxies, if not all, are thought to have a supermassive black hole at their center, our own Milky Way galaxy included. Their presence poses a giant question: how do they feed?

Scientists may have found a clue by observing the feeding habits of smaller black holes (but still massive; although they still aren't called kindamassive black holes for some reason).

By observing actively feeding black holes, they determined that when it comes to their feeding habits, size doesn't matter. Well, it does, in a sense that they eat an amount relative to their size, but what they found is that they feed in the same way.

Black holes that are located in the center of galaxies feed on gas from the immediate region, while smaller black holes are usually found feeding on a single star. Whatever they feed on though, it seems that all of them feed in the same way.

One scientist explains it this way: "They don't seem to care too much where they get their food from." So there you have it. In the center of every galaxy is a supermassive black hole that grabs at anything it can, with the same table manners as the smaller folk.

black holes feeding on gas? i know of other black holes *passing* gas! hahaha!

toilet humor aside. :p

this whole black hole feeding on gas/star/etc makes me feel like the scientists are talking about live organisms. kinda like... cells. yknow. ameobas get pretty crazy when they start feeding and absorbing pretty much anything they can get there icky proboscises on. and ameobas don't really care much of what they eat or where it came from. so in a sense... if i may use an analogy... maybe black holes are just like the cosmos' version of the ameoba.

kinda sucks doesn't it? one fine morning, you're just mowing the lawn and suddenly BOOM. black hole eats your planet, and all you got to say to st peter is "aww, man, a supermassive ameoba just ate us all up." and he'd be like "really, are your sure it's not just a kindamassive ameoba?" and you're like "oh c'mon, just give me my 'Continue' already!"
