When was the last time you visited the Pacific Ocean and dipped your feet in its waters? If you haven't, then you're not alone.

A recent survey by the Travel Industry Association or TIA has indicated that nearly three out of four U.S. kids have never done so yet.

Oregon Tourism Commission CEO Todd Davidson pointed out that  various media tend to keep kids from communing with nature:

In this age of TV, the Internet and video games, children are more often losing touch with nature and not connecting with the world around them. Here in Oregon, we believe it's time to unplug and interact with the natural wonders of our world, like the Pacific Ocean.

Travel Oregon's answer to this situation is explOREGON, a new initiative designed to inspire children to discover the beauty of nature - specifically, the 363 miles of Oregon's public coastline.

It will involve various activities such as glass float hunting, kite flying, and sand castle building. The explOREGON program also includes a nationwide contest, the prize of which is a trip to explore the Oregon coast.
