First evidence of under-ice volcanic eruption in Antarctica - Image 1

In what must have been a spectacular show of fire and ice, a volcano erupted under the Antarctic ice sheet, spreading ash across an area larger than Wales. Only, no one ever saw the eruption since it occurred 2000 years ago.

Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey recently found a large layer of ash produced by a "subglacial" volcano using ice-sounding radar. They believe the eruption was the largest one to occur in Antarctica in 10,000 years. The volcano still remains active.

The eruption blew a hole in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, causing sea levels to rise. The scientists now believe that the heat from the volcano is speeding up the flow of the Pine Island Glacier towards the coast.

Scientists are now monitoring the Pine Island Glacier to see how much the volcano is really affecting it. The discovery of the volcano under the ice will help in predicting the rise of sea levels due to the melting ice sheet.

While the volcano does contribute to the melting, it cannot be blamed for the wider level of melting ice that contributes to a rising sea level. Scientists believe that the main source of the melting ice is the warming ocean waters.

Hold your breath. The microbes from those volcanoes are alien souls that will turn you into Scientologists.
