Study shows caffeine doubles miscarriage risk - Image 1Even though coffee has been noted to have lots of positive effects for our bodies, pregnant women might wanna put a lid on that coffee binging . In a study done by Dr. De-Kun Li of Kaiser Permanente Division of Research and colleagues, they were able to find out that pregnant women who take in 200 milligrams of caffeine or about 2 cups of coffee double their risk for miscarriage.

Although there have been roughly 15 to 18 studies that have found a link between caffeine intake during pregnancy and miscarriage, there were no absolute answers. The previous results could have been skewed because of the fact the pregnant women avoid coffee because it makes them nauseous.

In Li's study, they controlled factors in order to decrease the contamination of their results. A total of 1,063 pregnant women from October 1996 through October 1998 were their samples. The women who were studied never changed their caffeine intake during their pregnancy.

The reason behind the risk is caffeine and not any other chemicals found in coffee, because same results were produced even when the women took in soda, tea and hot chocolate. Caffeine is harmful since it could stress the fetus' immature metabolism and decrease blood flow in the placenta.

With the findings that Li's group was able to find, Li said that, "To me, the safe dose is zero. If you really have to drink coffee, try to limit it to one cup or at the most two cups. Or better yet, switch to decaffeinated beverages."
