Study: Baby itemscontain chemicals harmful to the reproductive system - Image 1University of Washington pediatrician Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana recently spearheaded a small study aiming to expose the ill effects of chemicals to humans that can be found in baby items such as shampoos, lotions, and powders.

The chemicals in question are known as phthalates and are being used to stabilize fragrances and make plastics flexible. Aside from baby items, these can also be found in normal items such as cosmetics, toys, vinyl flooring, and medical supplies.

According to the said study, elevated levels of phthalates were found in the urine of babies after they've been shampooed, lotioned, and powdered. Other studies have already suggested that the said chemicals can cause reproductive issues especially during puberty.

"The bottom line is that these chemicals likely do exist in products that we're commonly using on our children and they potentially could cause health effects," said Sathyanarayana. Common phthalates are usually labeled DEP and DEHP in products.

The Food and Drug Administration of U.S., on the other hand, has maintained that the ill effects of the chemicals to humans has yet to be confirmed and established. "Should new data emerge, we will inform the public as well as the industry," added the FDA.
