Stem cell research: regeneration of dystrophy-afflicted muscles possible - Image 1Stem cell research is not totally accepted by everyone especially that the whole idea borders on the subject of cloning. But proponents of the said study are hoping that all of that will change after they've proven the benefits of stem-cell research.

Recently, Assistant Professor of Developmental Biology and Molecular Biology Dr. Rita Perlingiero of UT Southwestern Medical Center has announced that their team has reached another breakthrough in stem cell research.

According to the doctor, their latest method of stem cell transplantation has proven that it is possible to grow healthy and functioning muscles afflicted by dystrophy. The subject used in the experiment was a mouse carrying a model of the said muscle regeneration.

This study, in fact,
is the first time transplanted embryonic stem cells have been shown to restore function to defective muscles Perlingiero further discussed:

These cells can be transplanted into the muscle, and they cause muscle regeneration resulting in stronger contractility. The problem had been that embryonic stem cells make everything.

They make a great variety of cells. The trick is to pull out only the one type you want.

The complete details of the study can be found in the February edition of science journal Nature Medicine. In the mean while, check out the source link below for other information regarding the study direct from UT Southwestern Medical Center.
