Stanford University to subject Einstein's principle of equivalence to testing - Image 1The physics community has re-opened Albert Einstein's principle of equivalence to testing and criticism that will ultimately "double check" the famous scientist's umbrella concept of the Theory of Relativity.

For those who've forgotten their early Physics classes already, the principle of equivalence states that objects of different mass still fall at the same speed when influenced by gravity.

The new study is being headed by Stanford University Physics Professor Mark Kasevich. To be able to get accurate results, Stanford created a 25-foot pit four and a half years ago that is capable of measuring the velocity of rubidium atoms' fall.

Kasevich is being assisted by graduate students Jason Hogan and David Johnson. The said pit, which is cylindrical in shape, is mostly made our of nickel and contains a vacuum tube 10 centimeters in diameter. The atoms will be launched from the base and then the three will be measuring their fall up to a precision of 15 decimals.

Hogan said that the actual experimentation will begin in a couple of months time after they finish building the atom source. This apparatus is the one responsible for cooling down the atoms to slow them down to make the job possible.
