Like ducks being led to the slaughter - Image 1

Thousands of sitting ducks in South Korea met a violent end last Saturday following a new bird flu outbreak in the country. While the South Korean government confirmed that the virus was indeed bird flu, government officials reported that the outbreak was caused by a different strain of the virus.

Known as a "low pathogenic" H7 strain, this new strain of bird flu hasn't been known to spread from birds to humans, unlike the deadlier H5N1 strain. Nevertheless, South Korean quarantine workers slaughtered 17,000 ducks at a farm in Gwangju as a safety precaution.

According to an official of South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry who wished to remain anonymous, this latest outbreak did not affect South Korea's bird flu-free status because the "low pathogenic" nature of the virus strain involved. South Korea declared itself bird flu-free last June after no new outbreaks were reported in the last three months following the H5N1 outbreak.
