South Korea loses contact with nation's first satellite - Image 1

The Arirang 1 (pictured above), launched back in December 21, 1999, was lost on December 30, 2007 when the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) confirmed that the uplinks to the multipurpose satellite were down. An official stated that efforts to restore communications with the satellite have failed, though the exact reason for its loss has yet to be fully determined.

Officials from KARI believe, however, that the loss of communication with the satellite may be due to a misalignment of the orbiting satellite. "If the satellite loses proper alignment, its solar panels cannot generate power that is vital for the machine," stated one KARI expert.

The Arirang 1 was launched to take high-resolution images of the Earth's surface and carries a surveillance camera that can zoom in close enough to allow a viewer to distinguish an object up to 6.6 meters in diameter or length and depth. The Arirang 1 was succeeded by the supposedly militarily-inclined Arirang 2 in 2006.
