Artist's rendition of SOHO spacecraft orbiting the sun - Image 1Data beamed from the ESA-NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft showed earthquakes - or rather, starquakes - rippling around the sun in the wake of mighty solar flares erupting on its surface.

The phenomenon gave solar physicists additional evidence to study the long-standing mystery behind the sun's interior make-up. This may even lead to clues which can be linked to other stars experiencing similar conditions.

Christoffer Karoff and Hans Kjeldsen, two scientists from the University of Aarhus, Denmark, found the data obtained from SOHO rather interesting. They explained how the five minute oscillations with a frequency of around three millihertz may be tied into the massive solar flare activity which occurred during the event.

This may be similar to Earth's own Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake incident in 2004, which left a large aftermath of other quakes which ran through the planet for several weeks.

The next step will be to observe the sun and other stars undergoing similar solar phenomena. This new mission will fall on the shoulders of the CNES mission with ESA participation, COROT.
