Bio-engineering is one of the things you don't want to involve yourself in, especially if you don't want PETA to be hounding you from behind. See that's one thing you never want to do. It's right up there with not chewing on power lines. But apparently, Allerca, a US biotech firm, likes chewing on power lines and they're causing furry heads to turn, without clashing paws against PETA.

They have just released the first set of specially bred cats that are hypoallergenic. What does that mean? Simply put: cats that don't give you sneeze-fits, red eyes, asthma attacks, and allergies. The cats were selectively bred by reducing a protein that triggers allergic reactions.

The good thing about this is they never used bio-engineering. No genetic manipulation, and splicing, and whatnot. It's natural breeding. They pooled a large number of cats and found a very small group which didn't have the glycoprotein Fel d1 (that's the protein that causes allergies). This is what they meticulously bred together.

Those three cats are just three weeks old. And they're reserved by waiting cat-lovers. How much is a no-sneeze kitten? Yes, they cost quite a lot: $ 3,950. But hey, at least you get to save on all the antihistamine pills, inhalers, and tissue boxes.
