Members of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences recently unearthed a baby female mammoth in north-west Siberia and according to them, this is the best preserved specimen of its type so far.

Scientists believe that the said mammoth was just six months old when it died more than 10,000 years ago. The most interesting part about this is that the specimen is so preserved (trunk and eyes are still intact and some of its fur remains on the body), scientists hope that the DNA that will be extracted from its frozen cells can be used to resurrect the mammoth lineage.

Zoological Institute Deputy Director Alexei Tikhonov said that the only thing missing in the carcass is its tail which is not at all a setback. He added,

In terms of its state of preservation, this is the world's most valuable discovery. To find a juvenile mammoth in any condition is extremely rare. The geneticists told me: "If you can get us good DNA, we'll have a baby mammoth for you in 22 months".
