New Zealand colossal squid - look at the size of that thing! - Image 1A New Zealand fishing crew got the surprise of their lives one day when they hooked a 30-kilogram tooth fish being munched on by a giant squid, the largest colossal squid ever caught.  The squid later died, even after the careful handling of the fisherman. They froze it and shipped it to Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand's national museum.

Now what? For sure, it's kind of hard to actually study a colossal squid encased in a block of ice. To examine the squid, the researchers must defrost it, but due to its size, defrosting it outdoors under the sun would have the immediate surface of the carcass rot while the inside is still frozen.

This is why the scientists want to microwave the giant squid. Hmm, sounds like the captured Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, already the biggest giant squid ever captured, might also be the ingredient for the biggest calamari dish ever prepared, with each ring being as big as a tractor tire.

But the scientists insist that microwaving the squid is only an option in defrosting it. They're planning to use one of those microwaving machines used by the industry to treat timber and the likes. Besides, according to them, the giant squid will taste like ammonia (and we bet will be incredibly tough to the bite).

Colossal squids such as the one being referred here are deep sea dwelling creatures that are known to be extremely aggressive. The New Zealand squid was the largest ever captured, measuring 33 feet in length and weighing 1,089 lbs.

Why dont they just put it in warm water and let it slowly defrost?
