Stem Cell Research - Image 1

Scientists from Harvard Medical School recently developed a method to turn ordinary skin cells to stem cells. The method solves a lot of moral dilemmas since stem cell research doesn't have to involve destroying human embryos anymore.

The problem is, this may not entirely be the case: leading stem cell researchers still believe that stem cells converted from skin cells are (for now) still no substitute for stem cells harvested from human embryos.

James Thomson of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, who was part of one of the teams that made the simultaneous discoveries, said that "This new research is just the beginning. we hardly understand how these cells work. It is not the time to abandon stem cell research."

Thomson likens embryonic stem cells as being the "gold standard" of stem cells. In light of this the new skin-stem cells need further study: first researchers need to perfect the method of converting the cells, and they also need to make sure they do not deteriorate over time.

 » Gold Standard?

how is something a gold standard if it has yet to prove worthwhile in the fight to cure diseases?

ADULT, not embryonic stem cells are the ones curing diseases; it seems that somebody doesn't like the idea of losing his big, beefy research grant

Maybe if you actually read articles about stem cells, you'd realize that most if not all use embryonic stem cells.

um no. Anyway Has anyone tested Semen, im sure that can cure something ;) jk

Anyway Of course embryonic stem cells is better. Its just those morons who thinks its wrong that has a problem. Im tired of these mindless fools who think they know everything. I so support the embryonic stem cell research. But the skin cell research is good too.
