Some years ago, computers took forever to boot up. Now, depending on your programs and specs, it only takes a few minutes or a few seconds. Now, a new circuit component being developed by scientists down at Hewlett-Packard promises to do away with booting up altogether. Excellent *Mr. Burns gesture*. Basic electronic circuits have three fundamental elements: resistors, capacitors, and inductors. This new wonder component is called the memory circuit, or a memristor. Essentially, what the memristor does is store the "memory" or the direction of the charge that flows through it. The memristor will remember the flow of the charge even when the power is turned off, unlike DRAM, which loses it. Not only would this mean virtually eliminating boot up time, but it also means smaller circuits, and in effect, smaller devices. We don't know when we'll see this tech become a reality, but it's a pretty exciting concept. |

» wow scientist!
This is remarkable. I hope this will in a consumer's home soon.

» Yeah!
I hope this comes soon. My computer takes like 2 minutes to boot up with Object Dock on. My other computer takes like 5 minutes to boot up.

» Another benefit
Dram also needs to be refreshed constantly in order to avoid losing data so replacing DRAM with this stuff would also decrease power consumption...At least as I understand DRAM.

» wont work
good Idea, their certainly on the right path..
I guess a better name for it would e the memory capacitor since it stores something..
but umm, yeah.. not going to work, been working with electronics for long enough that I probably have spoken with these "so called scientist" b4
believe what you want, I am here to state this wont work..
if anything they should take a look at how an sd card stores its info, use a system like the regularly used CMOS system and apply the data to use only that source of energy.. that way the data will continue passing even after the computer is off.
and when you think about it.. all this will do is put the computer to sleep but use allot less power.. big whoop, soon as no energy in suplyed it all goes to ***** and your bac to booting up.. (untill the next unplug)
my idea would actually have a greater means of succes, because the power will be replenished while plugged and retained while inactive..
maybe one of you should send this comment to HP.. and tell them to take their heads out of their ass before they go public with their retarded ideas..

» Wow, you're pretty stupid!
This isn't memory. This is circuit electronics
The idea is to have these new components snapshot the actual direction of current in circuits, thereby eliminating the need for a computer to boot (because the state the board was in when last switched off is STORED)

you're so smart, agthang, why are you spelling like a 10 year old and trolling a gaming news site?
YOU can send your comment to HP, (because no one else cares) and maybe they can have a good laugh about how pathetic you sound.
