Scientists believe hyperfast star was catapulted by black hole from other galaxy - Image 1

In 2005, scientists were puzzled by a star that was found speeding away from the Milky Way Galaxy. The star - dubbed HE 0437-5439 - wasn't unusual in itself, except that it wasn't supposed to be anywhere near our galaxy; it's too young to have traveled so far.

Scientists initially believed that it came from the center of our galaxy, like the Sun, but the star would have taken 100 million years for it to get to its current location. The problem with that theory is that the star is only 35 million years old.

Gathering new data, scientists now believe that the star has been catapulted into our line of sight from another galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. They also believe that the star was part of a binary system, where two stars orbit each other.

As the theory goes, the binary system where the star came from came too close to a black hole 1,000 times the mass of our Sun. One of the stars was swallowed up and HE 0437-5439 was thrown out of its orbit and catapulted into space.

The star is currently speeding away from our galaxy at a speed of 1.6 million miles per hour. Scientists are now trying to search the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy for the presence of the black hole.
