barb agnewSaving wildlife doesn't always mean packing up and heading for Africa or Borneo. It can be a backyard thing. Just ask florist Barb Agnew. Barb has launched a mission to save thousands of Monarch butterflies whose nesting site is being demolished to build a flood basin.

Racing against time and construction progress, Agnew is collecting as many butterfly eggs as she can. "I'd be doing this anyway just because these creatures are so beautiful," said Agnew, 44. "But with the destruction, there's a greater sense of urgency. I couldn't bear to see them be killed." She brings the rescued eggs to the flower shop she co-owns in Wauwatosa where she takes care of them until they hatch. Agnew says she'll rescue about 1,000 monarchs this year.

Monarchs are especially noted for their long annual southward migrations from August through October. Their northward migration takes place in the spring. These migrations are longer than the Monarch butterflies' life span, which is less than two months. A single migration is made up of several generations of butterflies. The last generation of the summer lives up to seven months, during which it flies to the overwinter location. Breaking the reproductive cycle, which could be the result of the basin construction in Agnew's town, can have devastating effect on the migration itself.

Jeffrey Glassberg, president of the North American Butterfly Association in New Jersey, said Agnew's attempts to rescue the butterflies are ultimately futile. "She may be saving these, but that won't have any effect on population next year," he said. "It'd be better to get people to plant milkweed and give monarchs a place to feed."

However, Agnew vowed to keep saving the monarchs.
