Sphinx, Egypt - Image 1

Tutankhamen must be turning in his grave over this bit of news. Ok, maybe not turning; more of slightly drowning, perhaps. Apparently, the pyramids and the monumental Sphinx itself are being threatened by rising groundwaters.

It's been reported that these historical sites in Egypt - some of which haven't been fully explored yet - are facing potential massive erosion wrought on by the rising water. These waters have appeared as a result of human activity and development in the area.

As the Japan Economic Wire reports, human establishments contributing to the flood include faulty sewage treatment infrastructures.

No specific details were given as to how high the water level actually is, but knowing how fragile these structures can get - how did the Sphinx lose its nose anyways? - large amounts of water could really mess things up inside those tombs.
