A civil engineer has been able to build the first solar-hydrogen house in the US. Mike Strizki's house in New Jersey uses solar panels, a hydrogen fuel cell, storage tanks, and a piece of equipment called an electrolyzer to provide electricity to his home all year round.

Mike Strizki is an advocate of using alternative fuel as opposed to provided electricity from fossil fuels. His house contains all the amenities, and his electricity bill is US$ 0. The former employee of a firm that installs solar panels started a new company, Renewable Energy International. He is seeking grants from the government and private companies to someday mass-produce materials that would power homes through alternative fuel.

Robert Boehm of the University of Nevada, however, thinks that Strizki's ideas for an alternative-fuel powered home does not make sense for the present environment. But he does think that such a home may very well be a sustainable thing in the future. He predicts that alternative fuel and hydrogen energy will be ready for the mainstream in the next decade, as long as enough money and support is put into the research and development of such a technology.

Strizki, however, isn't dissuaded by the criticisms that alternative fuel is too pricey or inefficient. After all, every new technology has to start from the bottom, and encounter many criticisms and negative reaction, before it is finally accepted as the norm.
