Researchers find broccoli extract may fight cancer - Image 1Scientists from the Johns Hopkins University have found out that a chemical in broccoli sprout extracts called sulphoraphane may prevent cancer. If this turns out to be accurate, then we may be one step closer in eradicating this disease.

Initial tests look very promising as the scientists took six volunteers and exposed them to high doses of ultraviolet radiation. It was found that there was 37% less redness and sunburn in areas covered by broccoli extract.

The author of the study, Paul Talalay, spoke about the findings and said that while normal sunscreen has no protection from UV rays, people should continue using it and not replace it by rubbing broccoli extract on one's body.

He explains that the methods they use in the experiments are very different from this common misconception:

We want to avoid under all circumstances people doing weird things like making broccoli sprout soup and applying to their skin and thinking that they will be protected against the sun. They will have not have any protection whatsoever, because it's a totally different mechanism and one cannot possibly substitute for the other.

Those
who've had the chance to review the data of Talalay say that more studies are needed since the results varied differently from one subject to another. They pointed out that some of the test subjects received UV protection of eight percent while others hit as high as 78 percent protection against sunburn.

Still, Talalay is very optimistic with the initial findings of their research. He believes that if the extract works in the skin, it could possibly act like a barrier against cancer in other organs.
