It doesn't fly and shoot flames, and it doesn't come in hotrod red, but this new exoskeleton suit does magnify human strength and endurance by as much as 20 times. It could even serve as an early version of the Iron Man suit.
The suit is being developed by Sarcos Inc., a robotics firm under contract with the US Army. The suit is hoped to be used in combat in the future (Gundam, anyone?), but for now it's only being used for hauling heavy equipment. For now, the suit has too many disadvantages for it to be practical in war. For one thing, it's expensive. Also, the suit is a tad slow (as you'll see from the video below). Perhaps its biggest disadvantage is its battery power, which only lasts 30 minutes. Fun fact: the firm developing the suit was also the company that developed the robotic dinosaurs for the Jurassic Park theme ride in Universal Studios. Cool, eh? but it is stupid and wouldn't work. I liked seeing the guy holding up the 2inch thick cable. I also thought it was funny that they made it so bulky. It is completely disfunctional because you would always be bumping into stuff and it would be intensly easy to disable one of these things by cutting one of the total affinity of wires.
I do not see how this could help anyone since all it does is increase you strength for the select few positions that you can lift in with the suit on.
A real Iron Man suit would be just like the one in the movie; a flexible suit. All that the suit should be is an extra layer of muscle with some armour. A huge backpack with huge arm and leg extensions wouldn't work worth a crap.
I drew up a prototype once to demonstrate a proper design because I was annoyed at this one.

We have had this particular suit for over a year. It is not a breakthrough, especially not the technology. We have had all these things availiable to us for at least 15 years and many private ventures and large companies have used it to create suits and robots (Honda Asimo). If every inventer had to crawl before they could walk, then no one would ever run. Henry Ford didn't re invent the car or the internal combustion engine but he did put them together in an efficient manner so that they worked WELL and were affordable.
Now it is obvious that a Jetpack is a very distant reality if at all but as I said it would be cool. They have already invented the jetpack but to get one to work with this would be great.
If anyone actually watched the movie then they would relize that the suit they came up with was actually very good and completely realistic with current technology except for the Uber power cell and the propulsion system. But like the first suit that he makes in the movie is totally feasible.

I don't get why everyone thinks that the military is the only use for something like this. Some people, like the guy in Ironman, have personal junk they want to take care of. And besides, wouldn't it be cool to run around in a intersting looking metal suit that (could) potentially fly? (a real one that could fly would definitely be cool)

Of course, you could just create an automated process and use regular machines but with this you get the strength/endurance of hydraulic machinery and also the mobility and ingenuity of a weak human.
