London sarcophagusHaving coffins buried beneath church grounds are nothing to be excited about, really. But if the coffin found is a rare Roman sarcophagus dating back to about A. D. 410, then it will surely make the news.

And why not? After all it does break the long-established notion of London's Roman city walls. The said sarcophagus was found 10 feet below the grounds of St. Martin-in-the-Fields near Central London's Trafalgar Square. Says Taryn Nixon, director of the Museum of London Archaeology Service, "This gives us an extraordinary glimpse of parts of London we haven't seen before, particularly Roman London and Saxon London.

The coffin itself was made from a single piece of limestone, either from Oxfordshire or Northamptonshire, 60 miles northwest of London. Inside the coffin lay a headless skeleton, with missing fingers. It was reported to be a man, 5-foot-6-inches tall, in his 40s. They, however, cannot be certain if the burial was of Christian or pagan by nature.

Interesting. Now let's keep a lookout for any news on the discovery of the portal to Diagon Alley.
