Primitive features of hobbit-like bones due to medical condition, says researchers - Image 1Don't be fooled with the hobbits that you guys have seen in the movies. These small human-like beings being referred to by Dr. Peter Obendorf and Dr. Ben Kefford are the Flores hobbits discovered in 2004, shown on the right.

Their theory was recently published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Science. Regarding these midget-sized bones, Obendorf and Kefford said that dwarf cretinism can cause people to look like small human beings, "hobbits" if you will.

They added that, "this extreme form of cretinism is the result of severe iodine deficiency in pregnancy in combination with a number of other environmental factors."

Although majority of the people who've taken a glance at the fossils have been trying to understand it from an evolutionary perspective, these two propose that this was an "environmentally caused problem."

They were able to back up their theory by doing their own research. With their results they were able to find out that, "these fossils are not a new species but rather the remains of human hunter-gatherers that suffered from this condition."
