America's Most Polluted Cities Revealed - Image 1The American Lung Association recently revealed the results of a new survey that shows America's most air-polluted cities. Did your city make the list?

Their survey has three lists, categorized by short-term particle pollution, year-long particle pollution, and by ozone and smog pollution.

Before we give you the lists, let's talk about the science first. This is a science post after all. The American Lung Association says that Particle Pollution - a combination of pollutants such as ash, soot , diesel exhaust, and aerosols - is like "getting a bad sunburn in your lungs."

These particles slip past your body's defenses and burrows into your lungs. It can cause asthma, heart attacks, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer. It can also explain how non-smokers can get lung cancer. Perhaps it's time to whip out those gas masks.

Now, on to the lists. According to the survey, the most polluted city in terms of short-term particle pollution is Pittsburgh, but in terms of ozone and year-round particle pollution, Los Angeles takes the cake. The cake is not a lie. Here are the complete lists:

» Let's hear it for Bako makin the top 5

I live in Bakersfield and we have had the worst air for a VERY long time. We used to be number 1 until a few years ago and now everyone is going "green" and we are number 2. Actually the number 1 is McFarland, a small community a few miles from Bako here, and from experience, I can tell you that unless in the very heart of LA then you have nothing on us. I do sympthize with you dvobgo92. I feel your pain.

The reason us here in bakersfield have the worst air, even though we are one of the least dense cities in CA, is because all the polluted air from SanFransisco, Fresno, Merced, and all the other cities in the San Joaquin Valley blows to the bottom and then we get in trouble for it. It really sucks.
