First artificially bred panda, Xiang Xiang - Image 1

It may be a while before they breed real life Kung Fu Pandas, but this may be the next best thing: scientists in China may use dogs to train pandas bred in captivity how to fight in the wild so that they'll be able to defend themselves when released.

The program was brainstormed after the first artificially bred panda, Xiang Xiang, died earlier this year after less than a year of being released into the wild. It is believed that Xiang Xiang died after getting into a fight with other animals.

The Wolong Giant Panda Research Centre will be releasing a second batch of pandas soon. The breeding program is China's efforts to save the species, which is in danger of extinction. (There are less than 2,000 pandas left in the wild.)

By observing police dogs while in captivity, Chinese scientists hope that the pandas would learn how to protect themselves once they are released.
