Even small victories must be celebrated. In this case, it must be celebrated to the high heavens, the stratosphere to be exact. The Ozone layer is mending itself! We earlier reported that the healing process may take 60 years, but now, at least we could see some changes.

Yes, folks. All the programs regarding saving the Ozone layer seems to be working! In due time, we might see the Ozone Layer go up to 1980's level and if we keep at it and develop other technologies to decrease our dependence on Ozone-depleting elements-- the better it'll be. Before its recovery, it declined steadily from 1979 to 1997.

Then, in 1987, came the Montreal Protocol. It's a treaty designed to protect the Ozone layer by phasing out the production of certain substances believed to be destroying the layer. Since then, new ways of living and thinking about the world and its future was known to most people. They became more involved and knowledgeable and concerned about the planet.

The discovery of the healing was confirmed by Eun-Su Yang of the Georgia Institute of Technology, when they analyzed 25 years of independent ozone observations at different altitudes in the Earth's atmosphere. What they found out was that there was ozone change in the region of the stratosphere. The improvement 11 miles up was thanks to the Montreal Protocol.  They are still observing the Ozone layer and checking if there were other factors in its healing. Until then, let's continue what we can for our future.
