"Nature may be cruel, but it only takes what it needs, and it does so respectfully." Insightful words from Baron Friedrich von Glover from Gabriel Knight 2. A group of tourists got to see that firsthand when they watched killer whales hunting down and killing a dolphin in Algoa Bay, off the coast of South Africa.Dive Tour Operator Rainer Schimpf, boat skipper Louis van Aardt and diver Pascal Fazio helped in photographing and filming the event. They not only captured the kill on film but also joined the orcas underwater for some extra footage. Schimpf said that the group had noticed the dolphins and the killer whales coming up behind their craft when the tourists stopped to refuel off Cape Recife. The orcas managed to isolate one dolphin from its group, bumped it out of the water and pulled it underneath the surface, where they proceeded to do what they do best. After the kill, the orcas abandoned the chase for the rest of the dolphins and began circling the boat. That's when the tourists decided to join them in the water, albeit cautiously. Fortunately, the whales were more on the curious and friendly side. Schimpf, van Aardt and Fazio believe it's once-in-a-lifetime tourism opportunities like these that need to be promoted and protected. |
