One-third of China Hurt by Acid Rain

A lot of people consider rain as a marvelous natural occurrence, in China, that is just not the case.

Apparently, one-third of China is hurt by acid rain caused by the massive industrialization that the city is experiencing. China's factories give out 25.5 million tons of sulphur dioxide — the chemical that causes acid rain — last year, up 27 percent from 2000, said Sheng Huaren, deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of parliament.

Sheng added that "increased sulphur dioxide emissions meant that one-third of China's territory was affected by acid rain, posing a major threat to soil and food safety". This and other alarming environmental issues has pushed the Chinese government to allot $175 Billion on environmental protection over the next five years, they also pledged to cut back pollution by 10% when 2010 strikes.

Aside from that, lawmakers also plan on increasing  fines for environmental violators, in the hope that factories would be using cleaner technology to avoid paying up, big time.
