powerplantNuclear energy seems to have generated a wide support from Americans, as reflected in a recent survey conducted by Bisconti Research Inc. on September 7-10.

Asked if they favor nuclear energy, nearly 7 out of 10 Americans said yes, while 68% support building new reactors at existing sites. The nationwide survey showed that 81% of those polled believe that nuclear energy will play a vital role in meeting the future electricity demands of U.S. Seventy-six percent agree that US utilities should now prepare so new nuclear plants could be built if deemed necessary come the next decade.

What the survey signifies is that the American people do recognize now the value of nuclear energy, and the need for it plays a significant role in America's energy production mix. Nuclear energy produces electricity for one of every five homes without emitting any greenhouse gases linked to the threat of global climate change. The survey also revealed that 47% of the American public recognizes the role nuclear power plants play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while 22% incorrectly believe that they emit greenhouse gases, and the remaining 1/3 aren't sure.

Interesting.

I'm not sure if I favor or not, as I'm sure they produce more toxic waste than other methods, but this is cheaper. a thinker.

» Entertaining Primer on Nuclear Power

The sad thing about all discussions involing electricity production is that the public has very little understanding how it's made in the first place. I work in the nuclear industry and have written a thriller novel on the topic that also serves as an excellent primer on the good and bad of atomic power. (There's plenty of both.) It is free online to readers - who seem to like it, judging by their comments at the homepage. It was also endorsed by Stewart Brand, internet pioneer, noted futurist, and founder of "The Whole Earth Catalog". See http://RadDecision.blogspot.com

» No thanks, I enjoy my planet.

"While I'm asking questions, may I ask why you favor a method of producing electricity that will someday render the planet inhabitable"?

I know I didn't quote that exactly, but a shiney pay-pal nickel to anyone who can tell who said that.
