Bats - Image 1

Reports have come in that bats in the Northeasters regions of the United States have been dying off because of a mysterious new disease currently being referred to as the "white nose syndrome."

The first diseased bats were found in New York state last year. It has been reported that as many as 11,000 died in that region alone. At the moment, the disease seems to be spreading. Bats showing similar symptoms have been found hibernating in caves in Vermont as well.

According to experts, this disease might be caused by a fungus that has been found on hibernating bats. Wildlife biologist Scott Darling spoke about this new problem, saying that it's unclear whether the white fungus found on the bats is harming their immune systems or is just a side effect of an underlying disease.

However, there is hope yet for these flying mammals. Darling is confident that they will eventually get to the bottom of this. So before we go, here are a few words from the wildlife biologist:

I'm hopeful that within the month or so we'll begin to get a better picture of what it is we're dealing with and we'll be able to develop some strategies to try to contain it.
