Scientists have discovered yet another asteroid on a potential collision course with Earth - and it could strike within two years. But don't start burrowing into a shelter or cave just yet.

Asteroid 2006 HZ51, discovered last week on 27 April, is 800 meters in diameter - large enough to cause major damage if it strikes. Additionally, the lead time to prepare is the shortest of all known potential Earth-killers. Scientists have calculated 165 possible impact dates, and the soonest in 21 June 2008. However, scientists acknowledge that the odds of HZ51 actually hitting Earth are one in six million - slightly better than winning a lotto jackpot.

The discovery of HZ51 has brought home just how unprepared Earth is to deal with a disaster of this magnitude. At this point, the only thing people could do would be to stockpile provisions, evacuate the impact region, and ride it out. On the other hand, the second-most immanent threat is Apophis, which could hit the Earth in 2036, and has a much greater chance of doing so - about one in 6000. With three decades warning, it is possible to avert the impact altogether. The B612 Foundation has been working with Earth's governments to send up a tracking device to Apophis in the next few years.

Meanwhile, HZ51 has been under less than 24 hours of observation. The orbit of such a relatively small body is likely to change. Bottom line: don't lose too much sleep over this one.

Theres no chance of this closer one hitting and if you look abck Nasa and them are already working on ways to deflect these thing if they come anywhere near earth.

I think in 30 years they'll be able to come up with somehting.

 » Relax

you have a better chance of your computer exploding in your hands than being hit by this one. Point is, even IF this was to hit earth, we would have enough time to evacuate the impact area.(where ever that may be)

I'd say the bigger worry, should this occur, is it landing in the ocean(70% of the earth) and causing waves of a much lager area than the actual impact zone. But, there again, if you're afraid of this, perhaps you should go buy a lotto ticket!

 » Hmm..this reminds me of

the prediction made through the bible code and by Nostradamus. If both predictions are accurate, then this asteroid will probably hit us by 2012. Even if this one isn't a dinosaur killer, the after effects of the impact will be deadlier than the impact itself.

 » 1 in 6 million?

Nah, i'd say the chances are much larger. They would'nt even mention this if it were that bad. Thats like flipping a coin 6000 times and getting 6000 heads.I'd say this probably could hit the earth. Being that it is so far away, the stupid scientists think it wont hit. It would be funny if it hit japan directly without warning and crippled there development rates. Muhahahah! Peace up, Japan down!

Interesting that you should mention 2012. Are you familiar with the myan calender? It also ends at 2012. and some groups believe that this will result in a new global spiritual conciousness. The "rebirth of Atlantis!"

 » lol please..

Remember, 165 possible dates, the EARLIEST being at 2008.. It will be just like every other "dooms day prediction", the day will pass, the next morning will come, and life will go on as usual, and you'll feel dumb. Really dumb.

Sure, the later asteroid with a 1 in 6000 chance Could hit us, but thats a long time from now, and at the rate of technology we will have more than plenty of options to solve that problem.
