Newcastle University scientists create hybrid embryos from humans and cows - Image 1The UK, it seems, is really on it when it comes to coming up with creating embryos. It was only a couple of weeks ago when we reported that scientists from the region has created an embryo from two women and one man.

In a rather controversial and shocking development, we just learned that scientists at Newcastle University have created yet another embryo - this time utilizing elements from humans and animals, cows to be specific.

For the more conservative type, you may be glad to know that the said embryos died after three days. But the curious thing here is how they were created. According to reports, what the scientists did was inject DNA from human skin cells into eggs taken from cows ovaries.

The Catholic church, as expected, didn't approve of the experiment and even went on record to call it "monstrous" and "of Frankenstein proportion." Professor John Burn from Newcastle University, on the other hand, explained their side:

This is licensed work which has been carefully evaluated. This is a process in a dish, and we are dealing with a clump of cells which would never go on to develop.

It's a laboratory process and these embryos would never be implanted into anyone.

Furthermore, the Newcastle University team added that the embryos would never be allowed to develop beyond 14 days. As for the reasons for the experiment, they added that it is aimed to understand better diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
