A captive gray faced sengi - Image 1

Animals, like people, come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Occasionally, you'll come across an unusual animal that's considerably bigger or smaller than the rest of its kind, be it an enormous rat, a tiny possum, or a giant sengi.

Scientifically classified as Rhynchocyon Udzungwensis, explorers discovered the giant elephant shrew in the northern Udzungwa mountains of Tanzania, East Africa. Camera traps belonging to the expedition team picked up images of the gray-faced sengi. Unfortunately, what the team members found was a partially-eaten carcass. Nevertheless, the team managed to capture more specimens in the days that followed.

The scientists then compared their gray-faced sengi with specimens of other species of elephant shrews. Though markedly different in terms of size and color, preliminary observations suggested that this particular sengi behaves in a similar fashion to other species of elephant shrews.
