It seems that there is hope for schizophrenics who have grown tired of hearing all sorts of voices. Canadian researchers have recently discovered a dopamine signaling complex in the brain that could lead to a new treatment for schizophrenia.

Dr. Susan George and Dr. Brian O'Dowd from the Center for Addiction and Mental Health said that their discovery is made up of two dopamine receptors that could offer them a new understanding of the mental disorder.

Apparently, this discovery is significant "because signaling through calcium release is a major mechanism regulating many important functions in the brain and we have provided the first direct mechanism by which dopamine can activate a calcium signal." So what does calcium got to do with schizophrenics? Patients suffering from it could have a disordered calcium signals and the dopamine system is the major target for treatments of the disease.

The discovery may lead to a better understanding of the disease and hopefully to a drug that could be the panacea to it all.
