NASA to post scientific finds, images from Mercury Flyby - Image 1

NASA's spacecraft, called the Messenger, successfully achieved orbital status on Mercury. The National Space and Aeronautics Administration (NASA) has announced that by 1:00 PM EST on January 30, it will be releasing scientific finds and images that have been captured during Messenger's consequent flybys around the first planet of our solar system, Sol.

The Messenger, short for MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging, was to be the world's first space mission to orbit Mercury. The last flyby ever conducted on the planet was almost 33 years ago, when the Mariner 10 conducted its third and final flyby of the planet on March 16, 1975.

NASA will be conducting a press conference at the NASA Headquarters' James E. Webb Auditorium at Washington, which will be covered live on NASA Television. To be present at the said event are:
  • James Green, director, Planetary Science Division, NASA Headquarters, Washington
  • Sean Solomon, Messenger principal investigator; director, Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution of Washington
  • Maria Zuber, Messenger science team member; head, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge
  • Robert Strom, Messenger science team member; professor emeritus, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, Tucson
  • Louise Prockter, instrument scientist for the Mercury Dual Imaging System, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, MD.
