James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York had a few choice words regarding the critical state of our planet right now.He mentioned just how badly the fossil fuel industry was trying to cover up the extent of the global warming problem from the public and that they should open their eyes to the truth of the matter instead. A recently submitted paper by Hansen called for the phasing out of all coal-fired plants by 2030. He further outlined that these plants should be taxed for their emissions until then and that there should be a ban on building new plants unless they are designed to trap and segregate the carbon dioxide they emit. Hansen was rather stern with his views of how the fossil fuels industry was misleading the public with its optimistic views. This was what he had to say regarding this: The industry is misleading the public and policy makers about the cause of climate change. And that is analogous to what the cigarette manufacturers did. They knew smoking caused cancer, but they hired scientists who said that was not the case. While he admitted that his outspoken views transcend outside the boundaries of scientists as researchers rather than public policy advocates, he does so because "in this particular situation we've reached a crisis". Hopefully, Hansen's rather forward address to the fossil fuels industry will have some effect with the future of our planet. |
